Chapter 24

* * *

DROP MISSION

“TELL ME AGAIN, SLOWLY,” SAID PAT.

Walsh led Pat to the outside balcony. Walsh’s hand shook as he fumbled with his cigarette. He had a panic-stricken look in his eye. He relayed the story to Pat once more: “He had the balls to go after a con artist in a crowded club with no follow-up plan. He walked into the bathroom, accused the guy of selling Tylenol instead of X, then bottled him over the head. He stopped to get a shot before booking it down the street to the food stand where I was at,” Walsh said, all in one breath. “Then he walks over to an alley barely a block away, and within spitting distance of the scene he was trying to get away from, he fools around with a hooker. After a while, I went over to the alley and found the prostitute crying and getting herself together. She told me a truck came out of nowhere, and some goons snatched him up like luggage.”

Pat didn’t find any of it unbelievable. All this shit was completely within the realm of Treats’s behavior. Sooner or later, living this far out on the edge, his luck was bound to run out.

But the timing. Fuck.

It was already one a.m. Jimmy had just told him he had to be at the bank no later than nine. There was a package waiting for him at the hotel lobby with all his fake credentials to retrieve the safety deposit box. He went over the cover story in his head again. He was his grandfather’s chief beneficiary, and grandpa had just recently passed. He just had to go over the paperwork to memorize all the obvious details they might ask him.

And what if something else went wrong? If he got caught fraudulently trying to get a safety deposit box, he knew he was going back to prison. He wouldn’t be able to call Jimmy to bail him out. They would disavow him altogether. The whole mission would be scuttled, and he’d be left high and dry.

“What the fuck are we going to do, man?” Walsh asked. Pat grabbed one of Walsh’s cigs from the pack on the table and lit up. He had to think. His eyes darted over the Dublin skyline, looking at everything and nothing all at the same time. His thoughts raced.

Should they spend the night looking for Treats? What if something happened to them? What if he couldn’t get to the bank on time? Jimmy might be forgiving, but the Whitey Bulger connections involved here wouldn’t be. And he was sure they would all be benefiting in some way, shape, or form—even Jimmy. Nothing was done in this world for free! A few broken bones might be the least he would face. He could wake up dead at the bottom of a river or be dumped in some back alley.

Pat began to pace. Even if they could look for Treats, where would they start? They couldn’t go to the Garda.
